Work continues at Cockenzie's 17th Century Salt Pan House

The 1722 Waggonway Project have been excavating an historic salt pan house since 2018. The building, situated on the shore at the Auld Kirk in Cockenzie, was recently featured on the BBC2 archaeology showcase 'Digging for Britain'.

Now that the archaeological evaluation is complete, the structure and remains of the internal workings of the building are being consolidated and protected. Work on this will continue through the spring, with the end goal being a carefully landscaped area, which will allow visitors to understand what the building was and how it worked.

This project was part funded by Salt of the Earth PSG Heritage Connections, and here we can share a new video update on its progress.

The next phase of works is scheduled to take place on 26th March 2022.
